“Known Pleasures” is a reinterpretation of Peter Saville’s design for Joy Division’s record “Unknown Pleasures”, which in turn was based on the first graphic representation of a pulsar, published by Scientific American magazine in 1971.

Master’s degree in Graphic Design from the London College of Communication. He works as a freelance designer, infographist and illustrator in A Coruña, after working for five years in Washington DC, where he has had the opportunity to collaborate with National Geographic Magazine, The Washington Post, The Guardian, Science magazine and Corriere della Sera, among others. He was the head of infographics for the newspaper Público and began his professional career in the graphics section of La Voz de Galicia. His work has been recognized by the Society of News Design on 11 occasions and he has won 28 Malofiej awards, the most renowned award in journalistic infographics. He has also been repeatedly honored at the ÑH awards for journalistic design. In 2011 he was recognized with the Gràffica award.


As a teacher, Álvaro Valiño has given seminars on news graphics in Madrid, New Delhi and Kuala Lumpur. He is currently a professor of the online Master in “Data Visualization and Information Design” at Shifta, Elisava. His work in infographics has been published in the volumes “Information Graphics” and “National Geographic Infographics” by Taschen and “Visual Storytelling” by Gestalten.
