The popular songbook of Galicia, passed down in a playful and entertaining way during family gatherings or get-togethers with friends, has preserved songs that remain in the collective memory, tied to these joyful occasions. This selection is designed with the aim of recovering part of that songbook—to aid the memory of those who already know the songs or to serve as an introduction to this cultural identity marker for those unfamiliar with them. The songs in this collection are the ones everyone knows, yet few remember when a group starts to sing. At that moment, we'll pull this little book from our pocket and end the gathering with the satisfaction of bringing back lyrics and melodies created by the collective imagination.

Manuel Rico
Manuel Rico (Boimorto, 1948). He carried out his teaching work in Madrid, the Basque Country, and, from 1978 onward, in Galicia, where he became directly involved in the process of normalizing the Galician language. He is the author of musical publications such as Puff (1981), Cantares (1983), Cancioneiro popular das terras do Tamarela, Tantarantán, tarantán, tarantiña, Eu non canto por cantar, Heiche cantar un conto, Cantos de berce, among others. He was a member of the musical group A Quenlla and currently leads an experimental workshop on traditional music, through which he has released sound recordings including A pulguiña e o pulgón, Cantares, Arrolín, arrolán, Vente vindo, ven cantando, Cantos de berce tradicionais, and Eu ben vin, virivín. His most recent publication, Canto popular galego, by Luis María Fernández Espinosa, is an annotated edition that aims to rescue a key figure in the historiography of Galician oral tradition songbooks.
Antón Santamarina
Antón Santamarina (A Fonsagrada, 1942), a member of the Royal Galician Academy, has contributed to numerous collective works that have been fundamental in establishing the standard Galician language and in Galician lexicographic and ethnolinguistic research. He is the co-author, alongside Manuel Rico, of this selection from the Galician Popular Songbook. He is also co-author of the seven volumes of the Cancioneiro popular de Galicia, collected and organized with Dorothé Schubarth. Together, they ushered in a new era for the lyric and musical traditions of oral culture, as transmitted by the last bearers of a Galician society marked by the abrupt changes of the 20th century. Antón embraced Dorothé’s project as his own, which made it possible for us to now hold in our hands the treasure of the Galician Popular Songbook and witness a new revival of traditional lyric and music in Galicia.
